Sugar free dalgona coffee: a throwback to appreciate the simple things
We all remember the dalgona/whipped coffee frenzy created when we all stayed in our homes back in 2020. This delicious easy way to drink coffee although not as popular now is a not less fancy way to enjoy your afternoon pick me up for one of those days where you have the time to just sit down and enjoy your favorite drink.
Dalgona coffee originated from South Korea and its popularity boomed due to the Kdramas we binged together (ok…maybe it was just me) Although it is nothing new for South Korea it made a trend into the US for its wonderful aesthetic and easy to make nature.
Tips to enjoy this recipe:
Put on your favorite loungewear clothes and nice comfortable slippers along with your favorite perfume the idea here is to try to engage all your senses to enjoy this little moment with your thoughts.
Find your favorite spot on your house maybe it can be somewhere comfortable and fluffy like your bed or favorite reading nook or it could also be outside if you have a garden where you can contemplate nature or my personal favorite just a comfortable chair next to my lighten scented candle.
Drink your dalgona coffee slowly so you can enjoy the whipped fluffy texture combined with the milk making the experience feel like a deconstructed milk shake experience :)
I think it is very beneficial from time to time to just sit down without any distractions and contemplate how far we’ve come and remember to enjoy life’s little pleasures because at the end of the day no one knows what’s going to happen next. This particular recipe can bring back so many memories and to be able to sit down today and enjoy it makes us feel that much more fortunate.
INGREDIENTS
This awesome drink only has 4 ingredients and it takes under 3 minutes to make here is a little more about why you need these specific ingredients for your drink:
Instant coffee: For this particular recipe you do need instant coffee since one of its ingredients is xantam gum which will be the responsible ingredient in creating that creamy whipped texture for your coffee topping.
Warm water: it will help the instant coffee to dissolve, you can use hot water if you like however this burns off the coffee crystals and at the end it does make a difference in taste and caffeine intake.
Zero calorie sweetener: you can use a variety of sweeteners out there but after several attempts I found out that a granulated texture sweetener is better to achieving the desired effect. There is a brown monk fruit granulated sugar that works just as well as the regular sugar, all the sweetens but without the calories and sugar intake :)
Milk: Classic milk will sure give you that expected taste. However to all my lactose intolerant people out there I recommend going for soy milk on this recipe, since soy milk has that heavy consistency which will help with the overall experience of your drink.
INSTRUCTIONS
On a separate cup combine your equal parts of instant coffee, sweetener and warm water and give it a quick stir until you reach a homogeneous mixture.
With your hand frother tap the bottom of your cup then elevate it just enough so you can still be in the liquid without tapping the bottom but not high enough to make the whole mixture fly around
Create a vortex with your hand frother and keep it in the same position. You will start to see the coffee mixture to turn a more light color and the texture whipping along the edges. Continue until you reach all the mixture on the same consistency. If you are using your hand whisk, just whisk at a consistent quick pace until you start to see the same results described above, changing to a lighter color and a more whipped texture. Note: this whisk method will take you a little bit more time than the frother with patience you will definitely get there
Last but no least grab your milk pour it into your favorite cup and add the ice or extra sweetener if you like and finally with a spoon top it off with your whipped coffee and voila! you now know how to make your dalgona coffee and enjoy it any time you like!
NOTES:
A few tips to enhance this recipe…
I like to taste the sweetness in all my coffee drink including the milk section. I personally like to add a little sweetener to my milk before topping it off with the whipped coffee, in that way you can enjoy your different flavors but without sacrificing the sweetness of it. If however you do enjoy that contrast between the sweet whipped coffee portion and the natural taste of your milk then there is no need to add that extra sweetness to it.
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do :)
