Café de la Olla (No sugar added)

Hello everyone! Todays recipe is a very special one close to my heart since I grew up with it back in the day :) the famous cafe de la olla or Mexican pot coffee is a very traditional Mexican way to make your coffee and I’m super excited to share this recipe so you can also have a little taste of Mexico in your cup. Plus is there a better opportunity to taste this wonderful coffee on Día de Los Muertos weekend? (Day of the Dead) This is a super quick and easy recipe that only takes a few minutes to make, so let’s get started!

INGREDIENTS:

Instant coffee 12gr: use your favorite instant coffee for this recipe no specific needed if you want to use the same as mine I use regular Nescafé for this recipe.

Cinnamon sticks: Only two cinnamon sticks will be more than enough, I don’t know about you but I just looove how anything cinnamon like smells, plus did I mention that this recipe will leave your kitchen smelling like the holidays? You’re welcome ;)

Anis star: Depending on the amount of coffee you want to make, I suggest that since this specific recipe is for several cups, use only one anise star, since it is very strong no more is needed.

Clove: Similar to the anise star the clove is very strong, so since it is not very practical to break this one in half we will only use one but for a shorter amount of time.

Zero calorie sweetener blend brown: The original recipe calls for piloncillo which is ‘burnt’ brown sugar but since we are striving to care for our sugar consumption we can definitely substitute it with a zero calorie brown sugar blend. Just because we like to keep an eye on our sugar intake it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy all the wonderful coffee recipes out there ;)

Orange peel: This is optional only if you like to taste a little citrus note on your coffee but for my personal taste I don’t really think it needs it.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. In a sauce pan place 1 liter of water and sprinkle your 12 gr of instant coffee

  2. Then place the cinnamon sticks, one anise star and the clove together on low heat, until it reaches a low simmer.

  3. When it reaches a low simmer take out the clover and the anise star as they can easily overpower the coffee if not careful, then turn off the heat.

  4. Let it cool enough to drink and add your sweetener to taste. Unlike the original recipe I always like to sweeten at the end because once all the flavors have come together in my opinion that’s when it’s best time to add the sweetness just enough to compliment everything but not too sweet as to hide all the other wonderful flavors :)

And there you have it! your own healthy cafe de la olla coffee cup to enjoy whenever you want, hope you like it!

Kindly,

Tayde
